Welcome New Paltz Property owners!!!

If you are a long-time resident of New Paltz, please know that we are committed to maintaining fair and equitable assessments for all properties on our rolls.

If we have received notice that you recently purchased property in New Paltz and you are a new arrival to our community, we extend a warm welcome to you and our hearty congratulations.

Whether this is your first home or not, one of your concerns should be your property assessment. That’s where we get involved. One of our biggest concerns is that all assessments are fair and equitable in relationship to other properties in the Town.

As a property owner you have many responsibilities, one of which is paying taxes!! Taxing jurisdictions –the village, town, county, and school district-- must raise money to operate. The real property tax based on the value of your property is one way that this is accomplished. Unfortunately, this system has some disadvantages. As Assessors of real property, of course, we have no control over the budget process. We can only make sure that you pay your fair share of taxes.

In order to maintain a fair and equitable assessment, we rely in part on the cooperation of property owners. The more information we have on your property and other properties in New Paltz, and the market place, the more equitable the assessment will be.

On this page, you will find important information about the assessment process, assessment terminology, and important dates in the assessment year, plus information about the steps you can take to review and/or grieve your assessment.

Also we present information about the STAR (School Tax Relief Exemption) which was passed into law as part of the 1997 budget adopted by the State. If your home is your primary residence, you automatically qualify for the basic exemption (*after filing the application*). If you are a senior (65+) you may qualify for an even higher exemption amount. PLEASE fill out an application and return it, along with the necessary documentation, to this office prior to March 1st of next year.

You may also be eligible for the Veteran’s exemption or an exemption for the Disabled.

We welcome you and encourage you to stop in our office and review the information we have on record for your property, as well as other comparable properties. We also have data on sales of properties in New Paltz, which you are welcome to review. If you have any questions at all about any of the information presented here, or questions about the assessment process in general, please call me at (845)255-0103 x1.
