You overcome the evil in society by doing something to help somebody. It's the momentum of a million acts of kindness. -President George W. Bush Citizen Corps, a vital component of USA Freedom Corps, was created to help coordinate volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Citizen Corps is coordinated nationally by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). At the state level, project staff is located in five regional State Emergency Management Offices (SEMO www.semo.state.ny.us.com), and oversee project development within the counties of their respective regions. State and local Citizen Corps Councils comprised of emergency first responders, volunteers and other members of the private and public sector will be developed with a mission to organize training, community education and response planning. In New Paltz, we are working to form a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in order to train people in neighborhoods, the workplace and schools in basic disaster response skills, such as fire suppression, urban search and rescue, and medical operations; helping to take a more active role in emergency preparedness.
