Established many years ago during the term of Supervisor Susan Zimet, the Senior Task Force continues to provide an important forum for seniors who reside in our community.

Thanks to the Task Force, interested New Paltz seniors meet each month in town hall to address their concerns about healthcare issues, public safety and accessibility, and recreation activities for the elderly. In addition, the Task Force has played a much appreciated advisory role in the development of the Community Center project, which, once constructed, will allow us to develop a senior nutrition program, and provide a central location for senior social activities.

According to the census of 2000, the Town and Village of New Paltz has 1,164 citizens aged 65 and over. Given our population of 12,830, this means senior citizens constitute roughly 9% of the population of the Town and Village.

Members of the Task Force have developed a Diabetes Information & Support Group which meets in town hall on the first Thursday of each month at 2PM. These meetings are free and open to the public for interested persons of all ages.

There is also an independent New Paltz-Gardiner Senior Club which serves social and recreational needs. The Club collects dues, and its membership is around 150 seniors, including 50 or so residents of the Town of Gardiner. That means the Club serves about 8% -13% of our seniors. The Senior Task Force, on the other hand, was established to serve the entire senior population without membership or dues required.
